Leanne's Positive Beauty Pledge
Posted on 03:25 by tripal h
Following last weeks mini-break from pledging, this week the Positive Beauty Pledge is back, and comes from the lovely Leanne, of A Slice of My Life. So enjoy...
Leanne's Pledge
Thank you so much to Leanne for taking part, to thank you, here is your Positive Beauty Badge to use as you see fit :)
If you are interested in taking part in the Positive Beauty Pledge, drop me an email for details :)
Leanne's Pledge
- I will never say anything bad about someone else's appearance on my blog. I will not judge other people by their appearance and I will always treat other people how I expect to be treated.
- I tend to be quite negative about my own personal appearance, as a part of my pledge I aim to stop this. I will try to see myself how others see me; I have an amazing group of friends and an amazing fiancé so surely I can’t be that bad!
- I won’t rise up to others who are nasty. I will take things in my stride and if anyone criticises me or my friends/family in any sort of way I will be the bigger person and walk away. I won’t give people the pleasure of getting angry/upset.
The Bad
This photo is from 2007. I’m trying to pose ‘provocatively’ against a poster of David Hasseloff! Why?!? I have no idea! I always thought that to have a good time when out I had to be ‘one of the girls’ and join in with their stupid poses and try and be the funny one. I am finally comfortable enough to just be myself and not care if its not what others want from me. I clearly hadn’t found a fashion sense then either! I’d always been quite slim and put quite a bit of weight on, this photo was taken when I was in denial about my weight and wearing clothes that really weren’t flattering for my shape! I like my hair in this photo but not a lot else.
The Good
This is my all time favourite photo of myself! It is from around 2006 time on a girls holiday in Kavos before I gained my weight. I’m simply striking a pose in our hotel room, nothing special but I look a little tanned and a lot slim!
I prefer this picture because I am natural and at ease. No stupid fake posing, just me, being me and being happy and confident.
Comparing the two pictures has made me realise what I already know. That I need to learn to be happy with myself and just be who I am, if others don’t like it then that’s just tough. Its also reminded me that I look better with blonde in my hair and slimmer, but I knew that already!
The Unconventional Beauty
I consider Adele to be unconventionally beautiful. Why? Because she is a larger lady and she is a little rough around the edges.
As far as I am concerned Adele is absolutely stunning – f words and all! She doesn’t try to hide her true self. Despite the fact that she is in the spotlight she remains the ‘common’ foul mouthed person that she is – she has remained true to herself where a lot of people would have changed.
Thank you so much to Leanne for taking part, to thank you, here is your Positive Beauty Badge to use as you see fit :)

Fashion: A Big Girls Day in the Sun
Posted on 05:01 by tripal h
So summer is here *looks out of the window...isn't entirely convinced....carries on writing anyway* So, yes, summer is "apparently" here, and all of us larger ladies are ultimately looking for ways to stay cool, but still hide our lumpy, bumpy bits whilst look beautiful.
Here is an outfit that I picked up in the recent sales, the only thing I don't own are the shoes, but I have a very similar pair :)
The Outfit: The dress is knee-length and really floaty, so it is perfect for keeping cool. But, if you're not very comfortable walking around with your upper arms and shoulders showing, then this cardigan is a great match. I actually went a size up, because I wanted something that wouldn't cling to my arms at all, because that just makes me feel hot. I haven't been out in really hot sunshine, but the cardy is ideal when there's a bit of a nip int he air, so perhaps best for evenings, or the weather at the minute, since it isn't particularly hot.
The Shoes: We all know that heels are incredibly slimming, but I am not a heel-wearer at all, so the current resurgence of wedges in fashion is an absolute god-send. They will just give your legs a great curve which is very flattering.
Extras: It's an "issue" that most of us don't like to talk about, but most of us larger women (and even slimmer women) suffer from rubbing of the inner thighs. It's not nice, and it's one of the reasons why so many of us don't wear skirts or dresses during the hotter months, when we can't wear tights. One solution to combat this is by wearing Comfort Shorts, which are kind of like tights, in the sense that they are a similar material, but only cover your thighs, and don't feel as tights as tights (hohoho!). The only place that I have managed to find any was in Evans, and I have a pair in black and natural. They came in sizes that depend on your dress size and height, but when I bought my first pair (the black ones) they only had the larger sizes, so I had to go a size up, and they feel really comfortable.
I know a lot of people saying that wearing them defeats the purpose of wearing a dress/skirt to keep you cool, but I don't know if it's because I went a size up, but I barely even notice that I am wearing them, and they have never made me feel hot.
In actual fact, I wore my black comfort shorts underneath my black maxi dress and another dress, in Istanbul. The day I wore the maxi, it wasn't too hot, but the day I wore a shorter dress, it was really quite humid, and again, the shorts did not make me hot. So, as far as I'm concerned, if the shorts helped me survive a hot country, then they can survive the UK weather too!
Okay so Comfort Shorts aren't very flattering, but for £6, and as long as your skirt/dress is knee-length or longer, these really are a life saver.
What will you be wearing to keep cool this summer?

Saturday Summary

What I've Been Doing...
It's no surprise to anyone, that part of this week has been spent putting together a few of the major details for Girls Day Out which is only three weeks away (hurrah!) We've had a lot more ladies show an interest over the week, so I'm no longer convinced that it's going to be a huge disaster.
For anyone who has missed our plugging, Girls Day Out takes place in Leeds, on Saturday August 13th 2011 and everyone is invited. We're meeting at The Corn Exchange at 10am (Katie will be carrying a helium balloon, so if you see (or hear) a crazy lady with a balloon, yeah, that'll be us!!!). Then there will be lots of shopping, and lunch will (hopefully) be at the Red Hot World Buffet.
There's still a week to go, to let us know if you're coming or not, before we book a table, so get moving :D
The Event Page is riiiight here.
In other news, work has been crazy busy, hence the slight lack of many posts this week.
Checking Out...
Anyone who follows me on Twitter might have seen me raving about this fantastic UK Bloggers Map, which lets you see where all beauty, fashion and lifestyle bloggers are located right across the UK. And of course, the most important part, you can add yourself to the map too. How brilliant is that?
Creator Hayley took the idea from Rose a la Mode's Style Bloggers Map, and I hope that everyone gets their blog on the map ;)
Reading...
I finished reading Gone last Saturday, and I quickly got into reading Hunger Games, which I had heard so much about from various people. To say that I got hooked to this book is a complete understatement. I started reading it Saturday evening, and finished it in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Intending to pick up the second book in the trilogy next week, and I'm now looking forward to the film eeee!! I'm also hoping to read I am Number Four, when the other half finishes reading it.
Watching...
"I'm Mike Loooooowrey!"
Michael Bay's Directorial debut makes it no huge shocker of my love for this film, but it's weird because I don't really have any explanation of why exactly I love Bad Boys so much. Well the rather yummy Will Smith may have had a little something to do with it, plus the chemistry between Smith and Martin Lawrence is just perfect.
I actually missed the first 30 minutes or so of this on Channel 5 the other day, but that's okay, it means I missed all the boring stuff right ;)
Listening to...
Distant Worlds is the concert that I'm going to in November, so last night, whilst doing work, I decided to belt out some tunes from the Distant Worlds album on Spotify. I don't think that I will ever bore of the music from these games. Nobuo Uematsu is just a living LEGEND.
What have you all been up to this week?

Girls Day Out: UPDATE
Posted on 05:10 by tripal h
Well Ladies, as many of you might now, it's less than a month to go until Girls Day Out in Leeds, and I have to say that I am getting really excited.
My co-organiser, the splendiforous (yes, that is a word in the Dictionary of Kat!!) Katie from LadyfromaTramp has designed a lovely new flyer featuring all the details.
If you or anyone you know is interested in taking part, then head over to the Facebook Event Page and RSVP, or drop either Katie or myself a line, and we'll add you on the list.
Following a little bit of a discussion over on the event page, we came to the conclusion that we'd book a table at Red Hot World Buffet for lunch, which is why it is really important that people let one of us know that you're coming.
Red Hot literally offers every kind of food imaginable (or near enough), so don't worry that you won't like anything, or if you're a vegetarian, because we think we've covered all bases with this place. Thanks to Jane for suggesting Red Hot :D
I know that a few ladies have said that they're not yet sure if they can make it, but we're hoping to book a table at the end of July, so it would be a huge help if you could all let us know by then, and that would be lovely :)
Also, a quick note that if you can't make it for 10am, please let us know, and we'll make arrangements to ensure that you can find us, or we'll send a minion (most likely myself) to meet you.
If anyone is coming on the train, then let me know, as I'll be meeting some other bloggers at the train station. And, if you need any help booking train tickets, then feel free to let me know, I may be able to help you find cheaper ones (although I can not of course guarantee this, I promise to try!)
Any more questions that you might have, just leave a comment below and I'll try my best to give you the answers.

Guest Blog: Karma
Posted on 02:46 by tripal h
There's no Positive Beauty Pledge this week, not because you guys aren't pledging, but because I wanted to hand over to Rebecca from Oh! Panda for a guest blog on Karma. So, here over to Rebecca :)
kar·ma [kahr-muh]
–noun
1. Hinduism, Buddhism. The sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences.
2. The force generated by a person's actions held in Hinduism and Buddhism to perpetuate transmigration and in its ethical consequences to determine the nature of the person's next existence.
3. Destiny or fate, following as effect from cause

I am not here to preach about religion, don’t panic! (I am quite firmly agnostic, for the record.)
Although I am not entirely sure what my beliefs are, I do believe in karma. I also believe in doing something good just because it is good for the soul. From a young age we are taught to do ‘good’ things and more often than not these good deeds are rewarded – often with a tube of Smarties (well at least when we were young.) Although I still enjoy the odd tube of Smarties, as an adult I have learnt that doing good deeds will eventually be rewarded in other ways and that instant gratification is not a necessity.
Sometimes it will seem that you are never rewarded for the good things you do, this is where you need to have self satisfaction in just doing something good.

Let’s look at this on a micro scale. Blogging. Everyone loves it when someone picks up on a post you have lovingly created and shares it either on their blog or perhaps links it on Twitter, so why don’t you make someone else’s day by sharing the love. It’s all too easy to blog and expect that just because you have put the effort in to blog that you must receive a comment or that you must automatically gain 4 new followers – it just doesn’t work like that.
Everyone was a new blogger at some point; share the link of a new blog you have found. It’s nice to do that.

On a macro scale, in life karma, fate, destiny, call it what you will, presents itself in many forms. I truly believe that those who do good deeds in life will be rewarded. It can be the little things like holding the door open for someone, stopping to help someone pickup the shopping they dropped, it’s not just about the good feeling it will give you but about being that kind of person. Manners cost nothing and just doing little things to help others along the way will prepare you well for a time you might need help. There is a difference between being a pushover, allowing yourself to be walked all over like a doormat and being helpful and doing selfless acts. Whether this can strictly be called karma I’m not sure, but by doing good things in life you will be rewarded. In this day and age everything can seem like a competition and life moves at a much faster pace and people take a lot more for granted – it doesn’t mean we have to rush along with it. Take time to appreciate things around you, be it people, nature, technology or culture.
I for one believe in Karma – what goes around comes around. Do things because it makes you feel good, do things because you can.

Saturday Summary
Posted on 03:11 by tripal h
What I've Been Doing...
I haven't really mentioned it in a while, but this week I've been preparing a couple of fun games for us to do during Girls Day Out. I'm worried that I've been making things a little too hard, or too easy (ARGH!)
If anyone is interested in coming to Girls Day Out, and hasn't expressed at interest, there is of course still time.
I'd really love to have an idea of numbers by the end of July, but absolutely everyone is welcome to come :)
Checking Out...
Well, of course there's my confessional, over at Jane's Modesty Brown blog, which you can check out here, but I also played a little part, in a recent post of Liloo's regarding darn Twittascope, so if you have Twittascope and want to get rid of, or maybe you're absolutely sick of seeing other people's horoscopes in your timeline, then Liloo's post is most definitely one to check out!!
Reading...
I'm not a very fast reader, so I'm still reading Gone, as I was last week, but after taking photo's of Harry Potter on Thursday for yesterdays post, I am really tempted to read them all again...!
Watching...
I'm one of "that" generation that didn't grow up with Doctor Who, because it wasn't really much on TV during 99% of the 1990s and half of the 2000s, so I kinda bypassed it, and I really can not watch the new ones, despite how awesome David Tennant was, purely because I can't help feeling like it's incredibly "dumbed-down".
I think that's why I really fell in love with Torchwood, because it feels like everything that I expected of Doctor Who. It's intelligent, with strong characters, great plotlines and not in the slightest dumbed down.
So, you can imagine how excited I was to discover that it was FINALLY coming back, after two years. And it didn't even bother me that it was predominantly going to be "American".
And then I watched it...and....it SUCKED!
It just does not feel like Torchwood anymore...I dunno, maybe it'll get better. We'll see I suppose.
Listening to...
Well I've just discovered that I have missed two albums by Plain White T's so I have been catching up on those...scandalous I tell you!! And very shameful. But thank goodness for Spotify!! :)
So that has been my week, what have you all been up to? :D

My Friday Confessional
Posted on 08:29 by tripal h
So, apparently certain people are boycotting my latest post, because it's too sad (it was also hard to write, so come on people, it's really about the first book more than anything :P haha!) But, anyway, to distract away from the sadness that my last post allegedly drew in, I thought I'd hide it behind another post, about something much more...erm....interesting...
Basically, a few weeks ago, I *gulp* volunteered to take part in Modesty Brown's Friday Confessional.
After I'd written it, I nearly chickened out and didn't submit it, but you know what, I am not ashamed (okay, maybe I am a little bit teehee!) But, anyway, if you fancy a giggle and a little bit of disgust, and maybe even an opportunity to see another side of me, well, have fun ;)

And so it all comes to an End...

Have you ever gone into a Library, or a second-hand bookshop; picked up a really old book and felt oddly moved by the history immersed in each page? The paper feels so fragile, and has an odour of age to it. You wonder where that book has been, who has read it, who has touched it, who has loved it, and who has cherished it more than words could ever describe. That is exactly how I feel about the very first Harry Potter book.
I wasn't one of those kids that grew up with Potter, in fact, the book had been out three years by the time I got hold of The Philosopher's Stone, and the series had already half taken over the world, to some extent. I like to think that I didn't jump on the band wagon, because although I'd had a mild curiosity towards the series, I'd just never really thought that deeply about it, perhaps because I was concentrating on my GCSE's at the time, or maybe I just felt like I was too old for the books I'm not sure.
I remember the day that I was given the first book so well, it's kinda freaky. August 2000. The day that I picked up my GCSE results. I won't go into all the details, because you don't really want to know, and it's only really interesting to me, on a nostalgic level, but basically my eldest brother bought me the very first Harry Potter book, to congratulate me on passing :)
And so began what is now an eleven year love affair with a series of books, that weren't necessarily the best work of literature (they were a million times better than the Twilight series, but just a little behind the His Dark Materials trilogy), but there is just something about them that I fell in love with.
I haven't read my copy of the book since that first time (I actually re-read my brother's "adult" copy of it whilst commuting to my work placement in London, back in 2005), and the pages just look so old, so full of history. And, I actually sat there for ages, after I'd taken these photos, just feeling the pages, thinking about where I was in my life in 2000, with absolutely everything ahead of me, College, University, my Future! Looking back and thinking about everything that I have done, everything that I have achieved, and just how much of that has been taken up by borrowing Harry Potter books from the library, watching the first film twice in one weekend, moaning about the exclusion of important characters, waiting for the postman to bring me the next book so I can read it before certain individuals tell me what happens like the book before (and yes, you do know who you are!!!)
It's very weird how much of an effect that one book can have on you, and I honestly can't believe that very soon, all of this will be over. Gone. Finished. Kaput. And the three child stars who, at first, I had really detested (I honestly thought the kid from My Family was going to play "Harry" ten years ago!!), are all grown up into these amazing young adults, who have reacted so well to their fame and fortune.
I might not have grown up in the same way the characters have grown through the whole series, because I'd left School by the time I read them, but I've grown in a sense of maturity, from having a whole future ahead of me, to being a part of that future, and actually living it.
I know that this has absolutely nothing to do with beauty, but I'd like to think that Harry Potter has been a big a part of your lives, as it has mine, and I just wanted to share how sad I really do feel that today is the beginning of the end of something that I consider to have been great (and yes, I am feeling quite emotional about it!)

A Temporary: Secretary Lucky Dip **Photo Heavy**
Posted on 06:00 by tripal h
This post is so overdue, it's bordering on ridonkulous! I think it's pushing a month and a half, if not two months since I bought a lucky dip from Temporary: Secretary, and the images have been sitting on my PC for the majority of that time, so I really don't have any excuses to offer, other than....nope, no excuses whatsoever.

The Story: So, I first came across Temporary:Secretary about a year ago, when Sarah started following me on Twitter (evidence that following people on Twitter can find you business ;P) The moment that I started browsing her website, it was like love at first sight, because practically everything was exactly what I look for in jewellery: quirky, fun and bursting with personality.
The Problem: Ah, the eternal problem of amazing jewellery shops like Sarah's?? There's too much on offer that I want, and I can never decide what to pick. I really am terrible at making decisions, so I kept putting off buying anything, because that would mean that I would have to choose, and I didn't want to upset the pieces that I didn't choose!!
The Lucky Dip: So, instead I spent several months wanting to buy a Lucky Lip, because with a Lucky Dip I don't have to choose. Ah, it's just so easy! And my brother's impending wedding brought upon me that great urge to purchase.

The Lovely Sarah: This is where I really have to thank Sarah, because I was looking for items to match a particular colour of dress, so I asked her if she wouldn't mind avoiding colours that would clash, and this was absolutely no problem. So, I definitely cannot fault Sarah's customer service, but then I couldn't anyway, because I do tend to chat with her on Twitter quite a lot (generally about her gorgeous cat Oscar...have you met Oscar? He's lovely, you really need to meet him ;P)
So, I wanted to share with you some of the fabulous goodies that I received as part of my Lucky Dip, which consisted of 12 items, for £20.
My Sister-in-Law: My new sister-in-law is an artist, in fact, to show you how amazing an artist she is, here is a picture of the wedding invites (this version is in Turkish, but she also had English ones printed as well!)

She is also an amazing photographer, so when I received these two little gems, I just knew that they would make the perfect "Welcome to the Family" gift for her :)

I also gave her a white-bead bracelet, that I can't find an image of.
My Favourite Pieces:
I have to confess that the ribbon fell off, and I'm so rubbish at tying neat bows that I haven't put it back on!!
I adore this lollipop necklace so much. It's on quite a long chain, and I wear it nearly everyday, accompanied by my Totoro necklace that I bought from Jiji Kiki. I love it.
How adorable are these binoculars? And so quirky!
I love the fact that this necklace isn't perfect, it has it's defects and is a little misshapen and I think that adds to the appeal of it.
A Television....on a necklace? Who would have thought it? Genius, I say!
This might sound weird, but I actually prefer the back the front. Not because the front is horrible, but this side just has this quirky little edge to it.
These three items are definitely the ones that I wear the most :)
Ear Rings:
The thing I love about these earrings, are that they are a style that I would never buy. I tend to opt for dangly earrings, so it made a change to have something a little bit different.
Ultimately, this picture was me trying to be all arty. And, I kinda like it :P
This is going to sound really weird, but these earrings remind me (in a good way) of those old bottle caps, but a little misshapen, and decorated.
Noting that I tend to go for dangly earrings, both of these pairs were weirdly heavy, which you'd think I'd have been used to!!
Ring:
A heart-shaped knuckle duster. Well, that's one way of spreading the love...fist style ;) haha! Or, it's taking the idea of kissing someone's fist/knuckles a liiiittle too far hehe :D
Hair Clip:
This hair clip is so darn cute, and I did actually wear this whilst in Istanbul, not for the wedding, but for a family meal the night before. Unfortunately, my hair is a little bit too fine for slides like this, and it kept slipping a little, which is a shame, but I still love it.
Saving the Best to Last:
I'm not going to lie, this has to be the most bonkers necklace that I have ever owned. It is a huge rocking horse. Oh yes. And I love it! It's the size that makes me chuckle, because I don't think that I've ever owned a necklace where the "pendant" is so big.
If you haven't checked her out yet, you can find the Temporary:Secretary Shop right here, and Sarah's blog right here.
Make sure that you pop over and say hi! Oh, and if you buy anything, don't forget to share ;)
