My Life in Make Up

So, I'm having a little bit of "bloggers block" and don't know what to blog about today, therefore, I've decided to  do a little tag that I spotted on EllyBellyBaybee. Some of you might find it interesting (woohoo!), but most will probably find it dull as dishwater, for which I can only apologise!

1. How old were you when you started wearing makeup?

I honestly can't remember, purely because I've never really been a big wearer of make up. I wore it occasionally, when I was at School, and even when I got to Uni, I only wore it for a night out. 

I do remember that I always used to steal the make up from my mum's bedroom from a very young age, especially her amazing blue lipstick that turned pink when you applied it (that lippie was awesome!)

2. How did you get into makeup?

I guess that it really started in 2007, when a really good friend of mine introduced me to Barry M, and I just fell in love with the incredible bright colours. The first product that I ever bought of Barry M was their Glittery Green Eye Crayon, and I remember wearing it in Woolworths one day (I know, Woolworths, let us take a minute to reflect *sigh*) and the girl at the till complimented me on it, and then the girl in HSBC Bank did too, which was a really nice confidence boost, and I think it all stemmed from there.

  

3. What are some of your favourite brands?

There aren't really any brands that I favour, more the specific products that each one has to offer: For mascara, I love Rimmel. For foundation, I love Bourjois. For eye shadows, I love Urban Decay or BeautyUK. For nail polish, I could be here forever, but I love Rimmel, BeautyUK, 17, OPI....!!

4. What does makeup mean to you?

Make up, to me, is a way of expressing a part of your personality, even if it's that bold side that is hidden behind a shy exterior.

5. If you could only wear four products on your face what would they be?

 

Gorgeous

Eyeliner

Mascara

Moisturiser

Lip Balm...which is pretty much all I'm wearing today :)

6. What is your favourite thing about makeup?

I'm quite a creative person, so I love how creative it allows me to be, by playing around with colours and messing around with application etc, so it's kinda fun. Of course, most of this experimentation is terrible and only seen by myself and my other half, but it's still so much fun.

7. What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup?

Personally, I am 100% for Drugstore make up, purely because it's all I can afford most of the time, and from experience, the majority of cheaper priced stuff is more than what I need, so I don't typically see the point in paying extra.

Urban Decay is the only higher priced products that I ever buy, when it comes to make up, which I buy very rarely, but I love the gorgeous colours that they offer in their palettes, and I've yet to discover a good dupe for their intense shades.

8. What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner?

Whoa! Just, whoa!

Don't be afraid to play around with colour, because it really is amazing to see how different colours can look together, to how you imagine them in your head. But, most importantly: HAVE FUN!!! Make up isn't meant to be taken seriously, it's about having fun, and feeling confident about yourself. 

9. What is one makeup trend you never understood?

Wearing a pale lipstick with a really dark lipliner. It looks revolting, especially when the lipstick has gone, and the wearer is left with this horrid ring around their mouth. Yeuck!

10. What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube and Blogger?  

Despite there being a heck of a lot of nasty trolls lurking around both You Tube and Blogger, who plod around dumping their shit on people who don't deserve it, for their own personal gratification, overall, I think that the beauty community is absolutely fantastic. I've made some incredible friends, who all know who they are, and who are all so supportive.

Tag: My 5 Inspirational Celebrity Women from Childhood to Today

I haven't done a tag in absolutely ages, so when I spotted this one of Joanna Louise's blog, I couldn't resist. I have to say that when I started thinking about this, I couldn't help thinking "oh god, I have no idea", and my mind just went blank. But, as soon as I thought of one person, three others followed.

Christina Ricci

I can not remember a time when I have not loved Christina Ricci. I've always been a fan of kooky, oddball characters such as Wednesday Addams and Kat from Casper (who I got my nickname from, believe it or not!), so it's no surprise that I like her so much. Although, I wasn't a fan of the blonde look she sported in Sleepy Hollow, she "normally" looks great, even in Penelope with her pig snout haha! When I was a kid, she was the celebrity I really wished had been my best friend!

Melanie C

I am not ashamed to confess that I was an enormous Spice Girls fan, right from the start, until the originally split up (wasn't really that interested when they reformed a couple of years ago...I think I've outgrown them now!). Back then, I always liked Emma Bunton, because she was the cute and adorable one. Geri and Melanie B both scared me a little (loud women scare me!!), and Victoria...well, she's just Victoria (what more needs to be said). Those four have always, in my honest opinion, taken the majority of the limelight, and Melance C just kinda floated around in the background, being a tomboy, and never really grabbing attention. That was until she went solo.

When Melanie C went solo, for me, she just proved, in my eyes anyway, that she was the real talent to come out of the Spice Girls. All of the other four had solo musical careers that were pretty pathetic in comparison to the fame they had as a fivesome, but Melanie C proved that she's much stronger out on her own, doing her own thing. And I still listen to her first album twelve years on.

Kate Winslet

I can't remember what the first film was, that I saw Kate Winslet in, but it was probably Titanic (for most of us, it's probably the first film we became aware of how incredible she is). Kate just oozes this natural beauty, not only in looks, but in how she is. And, I love the fact that, in the nineties, at least, Kate wasn't this wafer thin girl, like most others, in the industry at the time. Kate had curves, and she wasn't scared to show them. As a naturally larger girl, I think I really appreciated having someone in the spotlight who was curvy, and sexy and just amazing.

She's made some incredibly diverse films, from Heavenly Creatures (excellent film, Peter Jackson at his best I'd say!), to Eternal Sunshine etc.

Ellen Page

I first came across Ellen Page, at Kitty, in X-Men. However, it was Hard Candy, in which Ellen really got my attention. To  anyone who hasn't seen Hard Candy, don't watch it with a male, they really won't appreciate it, and if you have seen it, you'll know what I'm talking about. Let's just say it's kind of like Little Red Riding Hood, except she's hunting the wolf!!

Since then, Ellen has played some awesome roles, from kooky pregnant schoolgirl Juno, to the brainy "Architect" in Inception, and unlike some of her co-stars *cough* Michael Cera *cough*, she's never allowed herself to be typecast.

I predict very great things for Ellen.

Amanda Seyfried

I first saw Amanda Seyfried, playing the dippy girl, in the oddly superb Mean Girls, and it's incredible to see how far she's come, far outshining her co-star Lindsay Lohan (what happened to her...oh yeah, rehab!!). Like Ellen, Amanda is very much an acting chameleon, and she hasn't allowed herself to be type-cast in any way. Personally, I get bored with actors who just play the same characters, over and over again *cough* Michael Cera *cough*

I love the fact, that Amanda shuns the socialising aspect of her celebrity, and is a true profession. It's nice to have young starlets who are in it for the art, not the fame, like so many other wannabes that are bogging down our media.

Tag Challenge: Day 23: A YouTube Video

Day 23: A Funny Video and a Cute Video

The first video I wanted to share, was one I discovered purely due to my love for the Kingdom Hearts games (currently kicking ass in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep...completed Ventus' story, working through Terra's and then will eventually get to Aqua!! LOL). The song that they are playing is the main theme that plays through the Opening Menu, and is an absolutely gorgeous tune.

The video features Kyle Landry and Matt Roy playing the tune on Keyboards...you HAVE to watch it to the end..TRUST ME, it is really worth it...and will have you in stitches!!



The second video that I wanted to share was one that Leesha (XSparkage) put up on her Discodollies channel recently. The reason this struck a chord with me, was because I was recently telling the boyfriend about the time that I tried to teach my cat Patch to play fetch....yeeeeeah, that didn't go so well! Until I saw this video, I never would have believed that it was possible to get a cat to do it...proven wrong :)

Tag Challenge: Day 22: A Website

Day 22: A Website for Kat...why is it so hard?

I have to admit, that I've been avoiding this Tag for the past few days, mainly because the majority of the websites that I frequent are the bog-standard every-visits-those websites, and I didn't want to say Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, because they're just boring aren't they? I mean, yeah, we all visit them practically every single day, but what is there left to be said about them, that hasn't been said a million times before?

So, I thought I'd talk about my own website (this might sound like self-promotion overload, but bear with me, because it really isn't!)

I registered my self-named domain over a year ago now (and boy, has that year sped by), but in those twelve months, I'd be amazed if the domain hasn't begun to feel a bit travel sick. My problem is that I want a self-promoting website that tells everyone who I am, what I do, and to encourage them to hire my services as a writer. That sounds really simple, doesn't it? And I can imagine a lot of you are thinking "you're a writer, it's what you do for a living", but it's actually not what I do for a living. I promote other people, other things, other services, I don't promote myself, and I have to say that promoting myself is not an easy task.

It's probably a self-confidence issue, hmm, no, it is definitely a self-confidence issue, but I just can not promote myself in a way that I feel happy with. I don't want to feel like I'm bragging about anything, but I don't want to play down on anything either. And then there's the question of what to include and what not to include. Do I write it from the first person, or the third person? Do I keep it 100% professional, or do I write it a little more casual and fun?

As a result, I have created more websites for that domain than I care to remember, never entirely happy with one, but I keep it until something better come along, and then I create another one that still just doesn't quite click with me.

A few months ago, I actually gave up trying, and the domain has been leading people to my Tumblr account instead, which is like a big compilation of several of my blogs. This, of course, doesn't feel right.

I just want to create a website that I've done for myself, and that I am 100% (okay 75% will probably do) happy with, and that just suits a need and a purpose, and that I don't feel the need to edit other than to keep it upto date.

Apparently, for me, that is too much to ask :)

Tag Challenge: Day 21: A Recipe

Day 21: A Beauty-Based Recipe


For a long time, I've been intending to post about home-made beauty products using things that most of us already have already the house...an easy and cheaper alternative to buying stuff, but I've just not got around to it (bad kitty, I know!!), so this is the absolute perfect excuse to do one!



Egg Face Mask and Moisturiser

This recipe was initially inspired by a video tutorial by Michelle Phan, but, as with a lot of recipes, hers didn't suit me or things that I had in my cupboards, so I tweaked it to suit my needs and such:


What you'll need:

• One Egg 
• Sugar (any kind, although I prefer Demerara)
• Aloe Vera Gel
• Two small bowls
• Spoon

Egg White makes up the Face mask
Egg Yolk makes up the Moisturiser

1.  Crack open the egg, and carefully seperate the egg whites from the yolk, placing both in two different bowls.
2. Take the egg whites, add a dollop of Aloe Vera Gel and a couple spoonfuls of Sugar. I use Demerara rather than typical sugar, as I found that the most commonly used sugars tended to dissolve in the mixture, defeating the purpose. Demerara has larger granules, that don't dissolve, making it perfect for getting into pores.
3. Mix the ingredients together with a spoon or whisk if you prefer
4. Once mixed together, apply to your face, focusing on the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin.
5. Leave for 15 mins
6. Wash off with tepid water, and pat dry with clean towel
7. Lightly whisk the egg yolk (you could also add a little milk to the yolk if you want to)
8. Apply the yolk to your face the same way that you would ordinarily apply a moisturiser
9. Wash off, and again pat dry.

Admittedly,the egg doesn't smell very nice, whilst on your face, however, your skin should be left feeling refreshed, soft and clean.



I highly recommend using this once a week.

Oh lord. Please don't hate me, but I honestly can not stand Fashion magazines. They're just not me at all. And to be fair, they're not really aimed at people like me (fat girls that don't quite fit the idea they like to convey in most these magazines). How many times do you wash your face daily?
Typically twice. First thing in the morning, and then at the end of the day. If it's been hot, or if I've been to the gym, I'll often wash it more than twice.

What skin type do you have?
Oily, although I seem to have it under control these days

What is your current facial wash?
Simple Oil Balancing Summat-or-other LMAO!

Do you exfoliate?
Sometimes

What brand do you use?
I have Lush exfoliating "stuff" that I just use, I can't remember the name haha!

What moisturiser do you use?
Simple Oil Balancing Moisturiser

Do you have freckles?
No...although I'd wanted them when I was a kid....I was a strange kid

Do you use an eye cream?
No. Although I'm starting to think that I need it, I find it expensive.

Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
I wouldn't say acne prone as such, but I'm sometimes prone to mild breakouts, although it'snever been that bad.

Did you ever have to use Pro-Activ?
Pro-What-now?

What foundation do you use?
At the minute I'm not actually using one. Sincemy skin has cleared up, and the redness has gone down I don't feel that I need it...especially not during the summer anyway.

How about concealer?
Again, I'm not really using one of the minute

I have noooo idea!

What do you think of fake eyelashes?
I love how false eye lashes look, but I don't like how they feel on my eye lashes...it just feels so unnatural.

Did you know that you are supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?
Seriously? I honestly did not know that...huh...interesting...although, if they only last three months, why are they so bloomin' expensive! I'd also like to question why my mascara says to change after 12 months....

What brand of mascara do you use?
Rimmel all the way

Neither

Do you have a M.A.C Pro-card?
Nope

What makeup tools do you use in make up application?
Make up brushes, hands and sponges/wedges just don't apply as effectively as brushes.

Do you use make-up base/primer for the eyes?
Yup. Urban Decay's Primer Potion

For the face?
GOSH Velvet Touch, although since I'm not wearing foundation, I don't use it that often

What is your favorite eyeshadow (color or shade)?
Urban Decay: Peace or Fishnet

Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?
Both. I tend to use liquid on the top lip, and pencil on the bottom lid and waterline
 

How often do you poke your eyes with an eyeliner pencil?
Hahahahaha.....all the time :-)

What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
I have quite a few of Barry M's Dazzle Dusts,and whilst the colours are awesome, I find myself using them less and less just because you get so much fall-out from them...more than with a pressed shadow anyway.

Do you use mineral makeup?
I try to, because it's better for my oily skin, although at the min I only have mineral foundation.

What is your favorite lipstick?
I don't really wear lipstick that often, but I do quite like my Virgin Vie (now Vie, I believe) lippie

How about lipgloss?
I've been wearing the free ones that I got with my order from ELF

What is your favorite blush to use?
I HATE blusher...I already have naturally rosy cheeks anyway, but omg, so many women just look ridiculous (not all women of course!)

Do you buy your makeup on eBay?
Sometimes, but not very often. You hear stories about people selling fakes on eBay! Having said that I bought a legit Urban Decay palette dirt cheap a while back.

Do you like drugstore makeup?
90% of my makeup is "drugstore"

Do you go to CCO's? (Cosmetic Company Outlets)
Um...who, what, where, when?

Did you ever consider taking make up classes?
TBH, it's never crossed my mind,

Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
Eye make up definitely, and especially eyeliner

Name a makeup crime that you hate?
Too much blusher....urgh!

Do you like colorful shades of makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow) or neutral ones?
To be blunt, I find neutral shades really boring, and they just don't suit me. I love colour.

Which celebrity always has great make up?
I don't really notice make up on celebs

If you could leave the house using just ONE make up item, what would you use?
Eyeliner

Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?
I could, and I do....just not very often

Do you think you look good even without any make up on?
No. End of...haha

In your opinion, what is the BEST makeup line?
Urban Decay
 

What do you think of Makeup?I think it's great, as long as you feel confident wearing it,and don't use it too much as a mask. Make up should be about highlighting your good points, and cleaning up the slightly not-so-good points, without masking who you are.

Tag Challenge: Day 17: An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture etc.)

Day 17: An Art Piece

Back in March, I visited an Art Gallery in Rotterdam. I'd never been to an Art Gallery before, and I didn't really know what to expect, but I was willing to give it a try, purely because it was something I'd never done. But, to be honest, I found it...really, really dull.



Since we couldn't read the Dutch writing, we hired some audio sets that went through the history and "meanings" of certain pieces of art. Whilst looking at most art, I found myself listening to these apparent meanings, and just thinking "Okaaay, I really do not see that at all!". They say that art is supposed to be subjective and open to interpretation, so why do galleries, or even people, feel the need to analyse what a piece means, and what it says about someone's frame of mind. How do they know that the artist didn't just chuck a load of paint randomly all of the place?


Despite that, there was one piece that I really loved.

On the back of my entrance ticket was a picture of a sculpture of Edgar Degas, that I just liked, and I can't say why. I'm not going to say..."oooh, I can really feel the innocence and pain of this ballerina", because to be fair, that's a load of old bollocks isn't it? Why can't we just look at something, and appreciate it simply for what it is:

Tag Challenge: Day 15: A Fanfic

When I was at Uni, I used to read a lot of online comics (the only one that I still read is called Count your Sheep, so funny, so cute, check it out ;-D), but one of them I used to read/watch was a fanfic of the old video games: Secret of Mana. I have to admit that I haven't looked at that fanfic in years, so I don't know if it still exists, but I couldn't find it at all when I did a (very) quick Google search for it, but I'm not really certain what it was called, or even where the author hosted it. But I'm fairly certain that the author had taken proper in-game footage and added his own "talk" to it, it was really clever, and as somone who had never played the games, that comic made me want to! The sign of a good fanfic!

Image via WikipediaAs a writer, Fanfiction is one type of writing that I have just never been able to "master". Long before I played the Final Fantasy and Disney crossover games Kingdom Hearts, I actually attempted to write my own fanfic using characters from Final Fantasy VII, VIII IX and X, in a world where they all existed together. Unfortunately, my fanfic didn't get very far.

My problem is that for a fanfic, you need to take someone elses settings, their characters and their characterisations. But, being someone who  gets a huge amount of pleasure from creating characters, I found it incredibly difficult to mould myself around these characters, rather than moulding them around me, as I normally would.

For that reason alone, I have the utmost respect for anyone who can write Fanfic well, and when I say well, there are an unfortunate amount of "writers" who write poor fanfics, so finding a true gem is such a special thing.

One issue I have with writing fanfics, is that even if you write the best piece of literature since War and Peace (open to great debate, of coure especially since I've never read the book and have no intention of ever reading it!! Life'stoo short haha!), you will never really get that much recognition for all of your hard work. Even if people like it, you just know that you could never get it published because it's legally someone elses creation, with your words. And, unless the original (probably very wealthy) creator is feeling generous,they're unlikely to actually let you have the copyright to use it. It's a huge shame.



But, like what I was saying in yesterday's Non-Fiction blog, about buying Gaming games, and owning merchandise, writing fan fiction is like shouting to the world about how much you love something, and it kind of helps to keep it alive long after the book/film/game has ended and for a lot of people I think that is really quite special.

Tag Challenge: Day 14: Non-Fictional Books

Day 14: Non-Fictional Books

It's been a while since I did a Tag Challenge post, and I'm not really very confident that I'll have finished the challenge by the end of August (next week!), but nevermind.

I don't really know why, but I've never really been a big reader of  non-fiction books. Maybe it's because no non-fictional subject is capable of holding my attention for 200-odd pages, or maybe it's more of a subconcious thing relating to non-fiction being strongly associated with education.

My GCSE History lessons consisted of an hour and half of making notes from a chapter of a text book and then answering the questions at the end, whilst the teacher drank cans of Diet Coke and checked her hair for split ends...no joke! Personlly, I think that this is poor education, and it certainly isn't teaching. Plus, I'm positive this played a huge role in my dislike for non-fiction.


In general, non-fiction really bores me. It's not that I'm not interested in things in real life, because I can not go a day without checking out the BBC news pages, but I'm not a fan of  "Based on a true story" or "Based around real events" type books and films either.

Despite that, I'm  not really sure if this counts as non-fiction, but I am a bit of a collector of gaming guides for Final Fantasy games. This isn't really a shocking revelation, because I am an uber fangirl of those games,which is evident through my buying of the guides, because 9 times out of 10 I don't really need the guides, in fact, I've been known to buy the guide for certain games (FFVII and FVIII) after I actually completed them. But, it's not necessarily about helping me to complete the game, it's about having this piece of merchandise, I guess, that represents that love for the game, in the same way as people express love for films and bands with posters, keyrings etc. Unfortunately, merchandise like that has always been incredibly rare in the UK, so the Guides are the only thing that I really have, besides the occassional free gift that comes with the game, and I mean occassional!!

A few nights ago, I was having a conversation with the boyfriend, and I realised that I haven't done any writing for myself in...I can't even remember how long! When I say "for myself", I mean fiction writing. It's quite sad that it's been so long, because writing has been my personal solace since a really young age. So, this morning I decided to set up another blog dedicated to a story that I've been working on for a long time.

The idea is that it doesn't necessarily have to be read in the order that I write it, which is why I've given the reader the opportunity to read through it by year, rather than chapter. Of course, it can be read in order!

Tag Challenge: Day 10: A Photo of me taken over 10 years ago

Okay, this post is finally here! The original picture is of myself and one of my brothers. However, I decided that my brother would absolutely kill me if he saw, so I decided to cut him out, and just include the part of the picture of myself!
