Make Up in Film: Tron Legacy
Posted on 07:03 by tripal h
You might remember some time ago, I started a blog series looking at Make Up in Film, in which I looked at the various types of make up used in the film: Sucker Punch. The whole idea behind the series was to combine my love for both make up and cinema (pretty obvious really!), and I thought that it was about time that I got this series back on track with a little look at another film that I've been loving recently, and that is of course Tron: Legacy.
The real challenge that I can imagine for the make up artists on this Tron film, was to create looks that were futuristic, and yet still had a very eighties feel to them (you have to remember that the "world" in which the Tron universe was created, was in the 1980s!).
Most people will agree that the eighties were very much all about the eyes, with strong colours and copious amounts of eyeliner. Nevertheless, in a world that doesn't really have a lot of colour other than black, blue and greys, I'm not really surprised that the make up in this film didn't mimic the use of colour. Instead, the focus is predominantly on the eyeliner, as you can see in this picture of leading lady Quorra, played by the absolutely stunning Olivia Wilde (can you believe she's the same girl who played Alex in 'The OC'??)
As you can see, the main focus (other than her blunt hairstyle, which is definitely more futuristic that eighties) is her eyes, which are one of Wilde's strongest facial features anyway. The rest of her look is very subtle, and you can't really tell that she's wearing it anywhere else.
Another stunning look in Tron comes in the form of Gem, played by Beau Garret:
Yet again, this look is all about the eyes, but Gem's are much more intense, with a focus not only on the eyeliner, but also those huge eyelashes and what I'm assuming are contact lenses that make her pupils really stand out.
Gem's look is more "seductive" than that of Quorra (who I consider to be a more innocent or perhaps even naive character), which fits in with her role as a "Siren", and then even more so a role of the character much later on (which I won't say any more about, in case anyone doesn't want to know!)
Unlike Quorra, I find Gem's look to be much more superficial, whilst Quorra's is a little more natural, if that makes sense. And it probably does to anyone who has seen the film.
There aren't really any other female characters to look at in this film, but I think that the comparison between these two is enough to get us thinking.
Which look do you prefer? Quorra's subtle but dramatic look, or Gem's intense but superficial look?
What other films have great make up?

Green People Make Up Remover and Cleanser Review
Posted on 07:42 by tripal h
Hey Ladies, I'm so sorry for the lack of blogs over the past few days. I'd meant to have this post up on Monday, but I really hated the photos that I'd taken for it, because they just seemed so poor. So, I took a few more on Monday afternoon, in the first pictures that I've done outside, and have only just had time to put the post up!!
Fortunately, I'm much happier with how these images turned out, with the product sitting in the lush green grass, so I'm very glad that I decided to do them again.
Brand: Green People
Product: Make Up Remover and Cleanser
Benefits: 93% Certified Organic, Purifying and Moisturising, suitable for all skin types, contains skin-loving Chamomile, Marshmallow and Aloe Vera.
Packaging: The packaging isn't really what you would expect from a Make Up Remover, mainly because I personally have only ever bought Remover that come in a bottle. Instead, it comes in a tube that is very much like a miniature toothpaste tube, however the opening is completely different.
My Problem Areas: Regular readers will know how lazy I am when it comes to beauty routines, although I am getting much better. I very much like products that do more than one thing at a time (Exfoliating Cleansers and I can imagine BB Creams will be a favourite of mine, when I eventually get chance to try one out!!).
I may also be known to "forget" to take my make up off before I go to bed....ahem!
What I was looking for: I'm looking for a make up remover that doesn't need to be washed off with copious amounts of water, that cleanses leaving my skin feeling soft, and doesn't irritate my sensitive eyes. No surprises, but I'm also looking for something that gets rid of all eyeliner and mascara without having to rub my skin (and delicate eyes) raw.
Why I Chose Green People: Although I received this specific product in my Leeds Meet-Up goodie bag, I've actually been keen to try something from them for a long time. Being environmentally friendly is a big deal to me, and I'm starting to get fed up with how much waste products involve, from packaging to needing to use cotton wool.
How the Product is Used: This is where the product gets interesting, well, in my opinion anyway. All you have to do is apply the product onto your eyelids, using your fingers and rub gently at the areas where you want make up removing. This will inevitably leave your eyes looking like a scary zombified panda, but you then either rinse it off with water (my preferred option) or using a tissue or cotton wool.
I love the idea that you don't have to use cotton wool, which is a definite plus because I tend to run out quickly now that I spend so much time changing the colour of my nails, so it's handy to have a bank up plan. I also like the fact that tissue is an option!
I guess I just like having options ;)
Did it Sort out my Problem Areas: Well, it did solve my problem for when I run out of cotton wool!! But in seriousness, it was really gentle on my eyes and didn't require a great deal of rubbing. Although it initially looked a mess, it didn't take much work to get rid of it with water etc. It didn't even irritate my eyes, plus I had no trouble removing both eyeliner and mascara.
Any Downsides? Only a minor teeny tiny downside, but for a "green" company (or am I just reading too much into their company name....??), I was a little unimpressed with the use of a box for packaging. I have huge grievances with this type of wasteful packaging, because what real purpose does it serve, and it goes straight into the bin anyway.
Who is this product for? Anyone who is keen to try a product that doesn't require cotton wool (necessarily) or copious amounts of water to stop the incessant stinging eyes!!
Has anyone else tried this product? What do you think? And, what do you think of other Green People products? I love this product, so thinking about what other stuff I could try out :)

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder
Posted on 08:01 by tripal h
For a long time now, I've marvelled over other girls blogs who do Face of the Days (FOTD) or "looks" and watched with envy as they create these amazing looks, blending colours and just looking absolutely fabulous! Since I started blogging, almost a year and a half ago, I've done a lot of experimenting with eye make ups, and I've improved a great deal since those early days. But, one thing that I really regret not doing?
Logging those experiments and progressive attempts through my blog.
Why have I never done it? Well, there are a couple of reasons. In the really early days of my blog, I didn't own a camera, and at the time, the mobile phone that I had had a fairly poor camera. It wasn't until last October that I was given a camera as an early birthday present, and then I just lacked the confidence to do looks.
But, another reason is because I'm not really sure if there's a proper name for it, but I have a very "heavy" brow bone, that means that you can't see my handy work:
You might be able to just about tell from the eyeliner on the edges of my lower lid, but this look is actually green. It's hard to tell because you can't see any of the colour on the upper lids.
It is incredibly frustrating, because I spend so much time on it, and the only people that will ever get to see our myself, my other half when I show him, or anyone who sees me with my eyes shut!!
But, even with my eyes closed, the effect seems to be substantially ruined by my awkward eye lids:
The crease on my lid just ruins is, in my opinion and I just wish that I had these big eyes to show off my learning. I know I'm not the best at applying eye make up, perhaps because I'm a little heavy handed at times, but sometimes I feel quite proud of what I achieve.
But, one thing this post has taught me, is that I'm gaining confidence to at least show what I've done, on my blog, even if I do have to raise my eye brows to get full effect.
I feel a sense of weird relief to be able to share them on here, just so that I don't feel like my efforts are being wasted completely by my silly eyes!
